  1. 1Sign up free at app.alpaca.markets (email only — no documents for paper trading).
  2. 2In the dashboard, make sure the account switcher (top-left) shows Paper.
  3. 3On the right side find API Keys → Generate New Keys. Copy both the Key and the Secret (the secret is shown only once).
  4. 4Paste them into us-portfolio/backend/.env as ALPACA_PAPER_API_KEY and ALPACA_PAPER_SECRET_KEY (live keys go in the ALPACA_LIVE_* lines).
  5. 5Restart the backend, then press Check connection below.
